A NEWTOWNSTEWART woman is putting one of her favourite leisure activities to effective use for a new fundraising mission.
Kerrie Neeson, now living in Strabane, has decided to put her walking shoes on in aid of Cancer Research UK.
The fundraiser will also be undertaken by Kerrie’s son Brogan and their dog Bailey, and the trio will spend October walking a total of 62 miles to raise as much money as they can.
“I thought it would be a lovely idea to do something for charity,” Kerrie remarked.
“I would be out walking with Brogan and Bailey regardless, so we figured why not do it for charity?
“Our usual walk would be around Strabane bypass, but we’re determined to try new avenues.
“In preparation, we have been out looking at different places we can walk and then recording the distance from the house and back to see which ones we can count towards the fundraiser.”
With so many organisations allowing fundraising through social media, Kerrie had quite a few to choose from, but she had her heart set on Cancer Research.
She continued, “Social media is a fantastic way to fundraise, and I knew that Cancer Research was always going to be the one that benefited from our walks.
“I chose it because over the years, cancer has affected my family in so many ways, so helping research any way I could was so important.”
Already someone who partakes in a daily stroll, Kerrie doesn’t have much by way of preparation to do and is looking forward to the challenge with Brogan and Bailey.
She concluded, “Cancer takes so many lives each year and if walking these miles in October can help raise funding and awareness then all I can say is ‘Bring on October!’”
