TWO new schemes have been launched to help underprivileged families in Strabane.
The Food Drive and also, the Winter Coat Drive are being organised by Melmount Community Forum Groups with the aim of proving a little extra support for people ahead of winter-time and Christmas.
Speaking this week, the forum’s Ivan Barr said that both drives are being launched early so that people might be able to consider donating.
“Following on from our successful (Food Drive) project last year we’re asking people to consider buying an extra can or two whilst doing your shopping in the run up to Christmas,” Ivan suggested.
“We are giving advanced notice that we will again be doing our project this year to help those in genuine need.
“An extra can or two over the next few months will be a great help in addressing community need whilst not over burdening our kind supporters.”
Speaking about the Winter Coat Drive, Ivan said donating a gently used or new coat will help keep less fortunate warm this Christmas.
“As we enter into the colder months please consider the needs of others and if you have an old winter coat or other clothing that you would consider donating to someone in need then why not post it on the Facebook page?
“It is through assisting each other that we achieve greater goals. Remember we only ask for items you no longer need.”
He concluded, “With the food appeal, it’s about giving people the opportunity to gather stuff up. But what we don’t want to do is impede on the foodbank in Strabane, because it does a great job. But coming up to Christmas we know that some people can need a little extra support.”
