Dunamanagh teenager edged out in final

DUNAMANAGH’S Jamie Gardiner suffered an agonising 5-4 defeat to Christopher Clifford in the Northern Ireland Under-21 Snooker Championship final on Monday night.

The talented 18-year-old North West College student found himself 3-1 down at the mid-session interval but he regrouped during the break and composed himself before reeling off three frame victories in succession.

That run of success had the Tyrone lad on the brink of a first Northern Ireland title, but his Derry opponent managed to show he too had plenty of mettle and he won the final two frames to clinch the Con Egan trophy for the first time.

Although disappointed to have lost the decider in St Pat’s Snooker Club, Magherafelt, Gardiner will be able to take plenty of positives from his run to the final.
