DANIEL Magee was delighted to be named Badminton Europe’s coach of the year at the European Championships in Ukraine.
The Raphoe native was rewarded for the success achieved by Ireland’s badminton players during 2019, which saw his siblings, Chloe and Sam, and Nat Nguyen excel on the international stage.
That season, the Irish team, under the 36-year-old’s leadership, reached the last eight of the European Mixed Team Championship in Bulgaria. Nguyen reached the men’s singles last-16 at the European Games and Sam and Chloe won bronze in the mixed doubles at the same event.
Speaking from his hotel room in Dublin where he was in quarantine for 10 days after returning from Kiev, Daniel, who has been sitting on the news for over a year, said: “We had a really good year in 2019 and I was in charge of the team at that point.”
